The Journey Into The Unknown

These are the calls for help from people who have been drifting in a rubber dinghy on the sea off the coast of Malta for many hours.

On board, refugees from various African countries who have fled the country and who are taking a long and dangerous journey to get to Europe. The boat from which the emergency calls came was one of several that had left Libya over Easter this year and had run into distress off the coasts of Malta.

The recordings were made by the self-organized emergency hotline Alarm Phone. Alarm Phone receives emergency calls from people on refugee boats and notifies the crews of the surrounding ships and the authorities to save the shipwrecked people. Or rather, they try to. Because getting the authorities to intervene is difficult even in normal times. In times of Corona it is almost impossible.

But people who flee are still there in times of Corona. What awaits the refugees at the door to Europe? And how has the current crisis changed the situation in Europe's smallest country?
